INSUFFICIENT FARE always feels like a stake in the heart.
This made me homesick. The Las Vegas equivalent is the gas light in the car. It’s equally good at picking moments when I’m late, tired, or lost to show up as a helpful reminder that life will never be smooth sailing and that the people who do appear to be coasting are doing a really good job of handling it and maybe I could learn from their example and not have a breakdown just because the all-night gas station is out of my way and I’ll get to bed 30 minutes later as a result.
Running out of milk, needing a haircut, vital bodywork appointments only available at the crack of dawn, the bank fucked up, gotta break in new pointe shoes, putting the duvet cover back on, Nevada’s lack of recycling services requiring me to drive to two separate places to get the little that can be recycled here out of the house, leaves and desert dust on the patio, a toenail falls off, low tire pressure, Mom wants to talk, the dryer ate all my bralettes, blood on the sheets, change the water filter, running out of tea and apples and cat food. Again.
